An announcement from Emily
How often do you stop to measure your successes? I find it is usually easier to remember the difficult times, but in this moment, I would like to honor all that we have accomplished.
In the past 10 years since starting Modern Macramé, I have traveled the world teaching plant and wall-hanging workshops. I always dreamed of traveling for work, and I was lucky to be welcomed to teach in Mexico City, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Kyoto, Berlin, London, Amsterdam, and many more places. I visited our rope supplier in Turkey. In 2018 wrote a book about macramé that finally paid out the advance this week! Woot! (a new book idea is brewing!)
I toured the USA in a mini van with my friend Caitlin teaching over 50 workshops from coast to coast over 3 months to celebrate that book.
I worked with amazing women in the studio and across the world, my teammates and my students who taught me so much about how to lead, how to be kind, how to ask for what you need, and how to be human. I am still learning. You know who you are.
We as a company sold over $3 million worth of rope, classes, and other craft supplies.
Our work helped launch the careers of small craft business owners around the globe.
We started a YouTube channel to offer free knot education. Some of our videos have reached over 144,000 views.
Our space grew from our spare bedroom to a light filled 400 sqft shared studio, to a 3500 sqft studio and private office, a retail shop, and then back to a 2000 sqft warehouse.
We created custom installations for Nordstrom, Ralph Lauren, Microsoft, and many private clients and interior designers.
I was featured in the Guardian UK as "the Queen of Macramé", Forbes, Elle Decor, Buzzfeed, LA Times, The Daily Mail, NYT, Nylon, Bust, and many more press outlets in paper and online.
Modern Macramé was born from a spark of reconnection. A glimmer of time tying knots with my mom in her kitchen back in 2012, to a community of over 300,000 now.
I probably have tied over 10,000,000 knots, but I have lost count.
I realized that I have also lost count of the parts of myself that started this whole thing. I have been weighed down by stress, financial worries, the beauty and overwhelm of raising a child, and losing the steam of my creative flow. My priorities have shifted and so have my goals.
I deeply long to reconnect to my creative self and my community in a new way and so it is with bittersweetness that I am announcing the end of Modern Macramé as a rope & supply company.
Not many businesses make it past the first 5 years. We made it through 10 and a global pandemic!
There are many more things to say. Gratitude to share. Ups and downs too. I will be LIVE on our Instagram on Tuesday, November 7th, at noon PST if you would like to say hi and ask any questions.
We are planning a big sale in person and online very soon, and hope to wind things down before the end of the year.
If you or someone you know is interested in talking about carrying the torch of this wonderful craft community, reach out.
With huge gratitude for the lessons of the past ten years,
I am eternally yours in craft and community.
Emily
